This month, jobs.ac.uk’s Academic Spotlight features Dr Angelo Battaglia, Senior Lecturer in Tourism Dynamics and Planning at Westminster International University in Tashkent.
We had the pleasure of speaking with Dr Battaglia about his experiences working in Uzbekistan. He began his role during the COVID-19 pandemic and describes his time in Tashkent as both rewarding and enriching. As an expat working in academia, he highlights the city’s multicultural environment and diversity as key factors that contribute to both personal and professional growth.
Dr Battaglia also shared his thoughts on what makes a good academic. For him, one of the most important skills is the ability to simplify complex ideas so students can engage with them more easily. He finds it especially fulfilling when students have those moments of understanding. It is a reminder of why teaching can be so impactful. These moments are particularly important when exploring global trends that affect tourism and planning, from economic shifts to political developments, and understanding how Uzbekistan fits into this global change.
In addition to teaching, Dr Battaglia is actively involved in research and is currently collaborating with institutions in several countries. His goal is to put Uzbekistan on the map when it comes to tourism dynamics.
