PhD Students: Where are they now?
Dr Alex de Sousa
Alex completed his PhD in 2022 at the School of Engineering University of São Paulo (EESC-USP).
His research focused on shear strength, punching shear, and finite element modelling of reinforced concrete structures, bridging experimental, analytical, and numerical approaches.
His investigations are particularly relevant to bridge engineering, aiming to enhance structural safety and extend the service life of existing bridges.
Alex highlights his motivation for studying this area is its relevance to society, as a practical application of his research may help avoid the unnecessary replacement and strengthening of bridges.
After his PhD, Alex continued at the University of São Paulo as a Post-Doctoral Researcher.
Dr Alex de Sousa is now a Professor and Researcher in Civil Engineering at São Paulo State University (UNESP), Brazil, specialising in the structural behaviour of reinforced concrete.
He has been recognised with prestigious awards, including the Mete A. Sozen Award for Excellence in Structural Research from the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and the Best Thesis Award on Structural Engineering from the Brazilian Concrete Institute (IBRACON), highlighting his contributions to advancing knowledge in structural engineering.
